You just wanted a few crisps, but suddenly the bag is empty. Not because you were hungry. Not because they were the best crisps ever. But because stopping felt&#8230; oddly hard.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s not a lack of willpower. <strong>It\u2019s exactly how ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are formulated to work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But what makes these foods so hard to resist? They belong to Group 4 of the <strong>NOVA classification<\/strong>, a <strong>system that categorises foods based on how much processing they\u2019ve been through<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take potatoes as an example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Freshly boiled at home? All good (Group 1).<\/li>\n<li>Instant mash from a packet? Processed (Group 3).<\/li>\n<li>Flavoured crisps with additives and colourings? Ultra-processed (Group 4).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What all UPFs have in common is how they\u2019re made. <strong>The ingredient list often reads like a chemistry set<\/strong>, think maltodextrin (a fast-absorbing carb used to thicken or bulk), hydrogenated fats, artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers (to keep textures smooth), colour additives&#8230; All carefully chosen to make them last longer, taste better, and keep you coming back for more.<\/p>\n<p>From fizzy drinks and protein bars to breakfast cereals and ready meals, UPFs are everywhere. <strong>Even items that seem healthy, like light yoghurt or plant-based burgers, can fall into this category.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n<!-- ******************** -->\n<!-- RIGHT ALIGNMENT -->\n<!-- ******************** -->\n\n\n\n<section id=\"kolom\"  data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n\t<h2><\/h2>\n\t<div class=\"wrap\">\n\t\t<div class=\"kolom\"  data-aos=\"fade-right\">\n\t\t\t<h3>Why you keep eating, even when you\u2019re not hungry<\/h3>\n<p>UPFs are designed to light up your brain. Not with nutrients, but with an intensely crafted flavour that\u2019s hard to resist. <strong>It&#8217;s the perfect balance of fat, sugar and salt, known as the bliss point which triggers your brain\u2019s dopamine system.<\/strong> That\u2019s your internal reward system, making you feel good every time you do something enjoyable, like eating, exercising, or socialising.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just about flavour. <strong>The texture is tailored too \u2013 crisp, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth \u2013 exactly what our brains love.<\/strong> Add flashy packaging, clever marketing, and the lack of filling fibres or proteins&#8230; and you\u2019ve got a recipe for mindless overeating.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"kolom\"  data-aos=\"fade-left\">\n\t\t\t<h3>What UPFs do to your body<\/h3>\n<p>While UPFs tend to be high in calories, they give back very little. <strong>No sustained energy, no long-lasting feeling of fullness, no building blocks for recovery.<\/strong> They <strong>spike your blood sugar quickly, followed by a dip that leaves you tired, irritable and craving more.<\/strong> Because they\u2019re low in fibre and protein, your stomach doesn\u2019t fill up properly, and satiety signals are barely activated.<\/p>\n<p>For athletes and active people, that\u2019s a double risk. Your body thrives on quality fuel: slow carbs for stable energy, protein for muscle repair, micronutrients for focus and endurance. UPFs offer little of that.<br \/>\nThe result? That\u2019s how you give your body what it truly needs.<\/p>\n<p>Structure helps too. <strong>Eating regularly and in balanced portions reduces the urge to reach for sugary snacks<\/strong>. And smart combos go a long way, think a boiled egg with fruit, or avocado on a cracker. They\u2019ll keep you fuller for longer than a handful of sweets.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\t<section id=\"content_blok\" >\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"content\">\n\t\t\t<p>Ultra-processed foods aren\u2019t off-limits. A biscuit, some crisps or a square of chocolate all have their place. But if you want to perform, recover and feel energised, physically and mentally, it pays to approach UPFs with awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Healthy eating doesn\u2019t have to feel like a chore.
