What causes low engagement and productivity?
Hyperconnectivity or the constant flow of information and digital communication makes it hard for employees to concentrate on important tasks. Not being able to effectively complete work leads to dissatisfaction, and eventually to less engagement and productivity. Additionally, hyperconnectivity necessitates the need for multitasking. Something we are not able to do, again leading to frustration and lowering intrinsic motivation.
Other causes are a suboptimal work culture, insufficient psychological safety, little connection between colleagues and a lack of career opportunities. All of these factors nibble at the engagement of your employees.
What does this mean for my company?
As the energy levels and focus of employees drop, so does quality of work. Absenteeism rises, as does the negative work culture. Stating that this affects your company is an understatement. In such an environment overall performance drops significantly, cutting into margins and severely hampering profit goals. It’s clear that diminished levels of engagement are often the canary in the coal mine, warning you to take action.
