Linking wellbeing and environmental responsibility in corporate culture

The inspiring journey of TVH

Almost 10 years ago TVH, a large multinational, decided that promoting a healthy lifestyle for their employees was the way to go. A strategy they recently doubled down on by appointing an Employee Happiness Advisor and by adding an extra environmental incentive. We at Golazo Energy are grateful to be part of such an inspiring wellbeing vision.

Who is TVH?

With a team of 5000 employees, TVH has been an established parts specialist since 1969, offering a vast range of over 46 million items for material handling, industrial vehicles, and construction and agricultural machinery. They are headquartered in Waregem, Belgium, with more than 80 branches worldwide. The regional headquarters in Kansas, USA caters specifically to the American market.

What was their challenge?

In an ever-evolving and highly competitive context, productivity is key. TVH chooses to prioritise employee health and environmental responsibility as a surefire answer. By ensuring that employees maintain a healthy work-life balance, uphold company values and create a positive environment, they create a win-win situation: Less stress, less absenteeism and a more efficient and cohesive place of work. It benefits employees, and sends a signal to potential candidates.

That’s why they introduced the Nudge Programme in 2015, an internal wellbeing policy aimed at encouraging employees to make healthy choices every day. The small nudges day in, day out, eventually becomes a long-term routine.

However, challenges still remain. As an expert in wellbeing programmes, Golazo Energy was asked to strengthen the current TVH’s Nudge Programme by addressing these following objectives:

  • Tailoring to diverse needs: With offices worldwide, TVH must tailor its wellbeing programs to suit the diverse needs and cultural differences of its global workforce.
  • Sustainability: Wellbeing should be a long-term project with lasting impact.
  • Communication and engagement: Ensuring that all employees are aware and engaged can be a challenge. Effective communication and participation across different regions and departments requires tailored approaches.
  • Employee participation: Encouraging employees to actively participate in wellbeing programmes is essential, as some may be resistant to change or hesitant to engage.

How we made it work

Implementing a comprehensive wellbeing strategy requires several essential steps. It begins with assessing the current wellbeing status within the organisation through surveys, data analysis and employee feedback. Following this, clear and measurable objectives must be defined, such as reducing absenteeism or enhancing overall health.

A dedicated wellbeing team oversees the programme, and tailors it to the specific needs of the employee, always considering the demographic and culture. Senior leadership support is crucial as well for boosting engagement.

To get the word out we launch a multi-channel campaign, with posters, CEO videos, emails and intranet communications. This approach enhances reach and participation whilst also underscoring the key values and commitment of TVH.

Last but not least, regular evaluation and reportings of the program’s output are essential for maintaining its impact and effectiveness. Constant monitoring of feedback is necessary if you want to adapt to the ever changing business context.

“It’s great to see how colleagues give it their all. It’s in line with TVH’s values of taking initiative and showing courage, as many of them are participating in this triathlon for the first time.”

Challenges and Lessons learned

It’s important to recognise where overall improvements can be made. A number of small aspects can be enhanced for a better programme experience. The main challenge however remains the priority employees give to their wellbeing. Fostering a culture that encourages employees to take regular breaks and maintain a healthy work-life balance in today’s fast-paced world can be quite challenging. Effective and streamlined communication, together with leadership examples help employees understand the importance of making health and wellbeing a priority.

A successful collaboration

The Nudge programme of TVH and Golazo Energy shows the success of nurturing a culture of employee wellbeing. Moreover, the decision to plant a substantial number of trees in Senegal shows the importance of adding purpose to your programmes. Engagement, participation and team effort all rise when you try to make the world a better place. We at Golazo Energy are proud to shape such a vision of wellbeing, together with TVH.
